CleanWeb uses one upstream project: The Block List Project. Below are the exact category links, recorded licenses, snapshot counts, checksums, and check times. The snapshot lives in this repository and is served from the same origin as the app.

Bounded starter snapshots, not complete mirrors

Each category is sampled across the upstream file, up to 5,000 hostnames. This keeps generation practical in a browser and makes every file reproducible. It also means a CleanWeb category does not contain every hostname in the upstream list. The source links below lead to the complete lists. Generated files print the same limitation into their headers.

License notes

Permissive, but not magic.

The source project publishes under the Unlicense. Some generated list files include a header that says MIT. Both are permissive and allow commercial use. CleanWeb records the discrepancy instead of choosing whichever sounds simpler.

  • Repository license: Unlicense. The full text is included in this repository's third-party notices.
  • File headers: some category files state MIT. CleanWeb records the header value per source and does not erase it from the source metadata.
  • Upstream data: The Block List Project aggregates and maintains data from multiple sources. CleanWeb has not independently audited the legal provenance of every individual domain or upstream feed. Published license metadata is not a substitute for your own review.
  • No endorsement: CleanWeb is not affiliated with The Block List Project, AdGuard, or Pi-hole. Their names identify the source and compatible software only.
  • Not legal advice: if you redistribute generated files, preserve attribution and license notices and confirm the terms that apply to your use.

How this snapshot is maintained

Fetched deliberately

A maintainer runs the source sync script. The build does not silently download new rule data from third parties.

Bounded and hashed

Entries are normalized, sampled, deduplicated, and written with a SHA-256 digest and source metadata.

Fail closed

If a source cannot be validated or a snapshot checksum does not match, the generator shows an error instead of producing a partial or invented file.
